Hi, I’m Martijn Ermerins. I studied physiotherapy in Leiden, the Netherlands and completed my studies in 2013. I enjoyed spending subsequent years working in a practice in The Hague where I honed my skills in treating a variety of patients. In 2017, I opened my own practice, De Oranje Tafel, where I am able to treat my patients and pursue my passion for physiotherapy. I continue to develop my knowledge through regular participation in courses focused on the spine and shoulder. Furthermore, I enjoy the challenge of treating patients with long-term complaints where, for example, posture, stress or other forms of tension play a role.
I am convinced that, as a physiotherapist, it is usually a combination of factors that interact with each other and that outwardly manifest themselves as pain. A physical condition and pain can be as a result of, for example, a posture issue or increased levels of stress.
"I encourage my patients to actively participate in their recovery process"
A treatment programme may not just focus on physical aspects. Where necessary and where it is helpful to the patient, I look at what preventative measures might work best: attention is oftentimes directed to influences such as posture, ergonomics or the impact of mental health.
If work is done only on the physical aspects of a patient’s condition, particularly those with long term conditions, it is unlikely that an effective solution will be found.
The beauty of my profession is that I can do something about the physical aspect of the complaint with my hands. I also get an enormous amount of satisfaction from coaching patients. I like to involve my patient actively in the recovery process and see it as a collaboration between my patient and me in achieving the agreed goals.
At the outset of treating any patient, I have always an expectation of results. This can be that within a short period of time, considerable improvement will be seen in less complex cases and in more complex cases, longer recovery times.
When the results are not in line with my expectations, I believe that it is important to work harder and further to better understand the underlying cause(s). Perhaps the initial diagnosis was incorrect. Or that there may be other factors that are hindering the recovery. After considering these, I try to adjust treatment programme. However, it may also be that there is no indication yet for physiotherapy or that the physiotherapy should be supported with another discipline.
Because De Oranje Tafel is located within a medical centre, you can enjoy the benefits of quick access to other medical professionals and I can work easily together with those professionals to quickly and efficiently reach the correct place for your condition.
